32 Lubaina Himid, Maria Lassnig Prize Winner 2023/24
For the fourth time in eight years, the Maria Lassnig Prize, awarded by the Maria Lassnig Foundation, has been presented. This year's prize went to the renowned British artist Lubaina Himid, who was born in Zanzibar in 1954 and raised in England.
Himid is Professor Emeritus at the University of Central Lancashire, the first Black woman to receive the prestigious Turner Prize (2017), and has been honored with the title "Commander of the British Empire" for her contributions to art since 2018.
In 2021/22, a comprehensive retrospective of her work was held at Tate Modern in London. Her works can be found in numerous museums and collections. Some of her most important solo exhibitions, aside from Tate Modern, include shows at the Frans Hals Museum in the Netherlands, CAPC Bordeaux in France, and the New Museum in NYC. Listen to Lubaina in this brief 20 minutes about her work and her relationship to Maria Lassnig's oeuvre.
